The HKUST 2020 Sustainability Challenge facilitates our vision of striving to become a carbon neutral, zero waste, net positive environmental impact campus. The Challenge includes an operation goal- by 2020, through a combination of reductions and streamlining efforts, waste will be reduced by 50% (using 2014 as the baseline). Big student event of promotion period is a great opportunity for us to reduce waste and reach the goal.

By collaboration with the Students' Union and Students Affair Office, the Sustainability Unit will launch several activities to encourage student societies to think and act sustainably to alleviate the waste issue.

1. Cleaning and recycling deposit: 50% of the deposit submitted to SU by student societies can be refunded after completing the recycling scheme during the promotional period with the assistance of recycling helpers.

*Clean up and recycle materials in the common room prepared for the nominated cabinet for big decoration preparation

*Disassemble and separate the big decoration and other counters' decorations on 23 Feb and/ or 27 Feb with cleaners for recycling.

2. Green Reps: IVP of each society will be the Green Rep and assist the society to meet the green activities requirements. Green Reps will attend the meetings, inform us the booth/decoration dismantle time and distribute information among the cabinet.

3. Green Society ProP Champion: encourage the nominated cabinets to be more environmentally friendly from preparation stage, committed cabinets will gain extra exposure in Atrium and Concourse during the promotion period.

Procedures

Submit the committed checklist and your cabinet’s photo and logo to green@ust.hk or hand in our office Room 2004, Lift 4 by 29 January (Mon)

Reward Details

Participating student societies shall commit to implement at least 15 items of the simple green actions (out of a total of 20) as listed in the Scheme checklist to make their operations greener during the promotional period. Committed cabinets will gain extra exposure during promotion period:

-E-board promotion throughout Feb

-Banner Promotion: 20-28 Feb

-Social media Promotion

# Nominated cabinets who failed to fulfill the committed items on the checklist during judging session will be removed from the E-board promotion from 8 Feb onwards.

* The locations of banner are the overhead wall of Science Common, overhead wall of LT A toward Atrium or area between 2 escalators to Concourse. The nominated cabinets’ photo will be randomly posted on one of the three banners. The quota of nominated cabinets are limited to 15. Only top 3 cabinets will have priorities to choose the banners location. Lucky draw will be used when the nominated cabinets have the same number of committed items.

Judging Session

We will look into the implemented items on the checklist in the appointed judging session during 5 to 7 Feb. Interviews, site visit and secret check may be conducted to verify the environmental performances of participating societies. Green reps should be in- charge of showcasing the completed green actions including the big decorations and the counter promotion during judging session.

*All the participants will receive support from the Sustainability Intern Team to help achieve the checklist items.

*All participants will get the certificate of participation.
