This year represents the second complete and comprehensive inventory of greenhouse gases (GHG) for HKUST, including all university sectors – academics, staff housing, residential life, catering, and campus operations. In GHG accounting terms, Scope 1 and Scope 2 are most relevant to HKUST. In the 2014-15 academic year, HKUST emitted 61,132metric tons of CO2 equivalent (MTCO2e) from Scope 1 and 2 sources. Because of the high air conditioning needs, Scope 2 emissions (from electricity) are dominant. GHG emissions rose 6% over the previous year. Much of the rise can be accounted for: * The launch of new Cheng Yu Tung Building, adding over 2,200 square meters or research-intensive space to the campus, drove up electricity consumption. * The emissions factor from our electricity utility (CLP) increased by around 1.6%, which refers to how much GHGs are emitted by the utility for every kWh of electricity produced. *The HKUST population increased by an additional 500 people during this year.
