Greenhouse Gases

This year represents the second complete and comprehensive inventory of greenhouse gases (GHG) for HKUST, including all university sectors – academics, staff housing, residential life, catering, and campus operations. In GHG accounting terms, Scope 1 and Scope 2 are most relevant to HKUST. In the 2016-17 academic year, HKUST emitted 52,600metric tons of CO2 equivalent (MTCO2e) from Scope 1 and 2 sources. Because of the high plug load and cooling load demand, Scope 2 emissions from purchased electricity are dominant. GHG emissions dropped by 1.8% over the previous year due to continued energy efficiency upgrades, such as the installation of LED lighting and more efficient air-conditioning systems. The year also included University-wide endeavors to engage the broader community in these efforts through energy reduction competitions for students and other green behavior campaigns.
