Warming our Hall

Living in a residence hall is a new change for most students; they are away from home and need to take care of their own living arrangements, laundry, and food.

Mr Leung Shek Lam, Senior Attendant of UG Hall V from Student Housing & Residential Life Office, gets excited when he remembers how he spent the past 22 years in HKUST helping students acclimate to their new surroundings.

Along with other hall attendants, Mr Leung keeps the residence operations running smoothly. He makes sure that the air conditioning is working, lights are on, washing machines are functioning well, and follows up with Facilities Management Office if needed. He also guides new students on using the hall facilities and coordinates with contracted cleaning staff on managing residents’ waste and recycling, especially during hall check out periods. As an eco-conscious man, he supports student activities and encourages students to separate their waste for recycling.

Over the past 22 years, Mr Leung has felt working here at HKUST is like going to a picnic. He walks 30 minutes from the bus stop, but says he enjoys every minute because it allows him to enjoy the fresh air and beautiful campus view. Working in the student halls is rewarding, but has not always been easy. He recalls one incident in the past when a resident hung all his wet clothes in a cabinet and then forgot about them (you can imagine what they were like when Mr Leung found them). Another time a student accidently broke the sprinkler in his room and everyone worked through the night to contain the water and prevent a flood. Mr Leung now laughs off those incidents, and says that despite the occasional moldy clothes and broken water pipes, working along with the students is a great reward. Within the new and renovated hall buildings, Mr Leung hopes that our students continue to show their care and joy to each other as we build a warm community.
